I have to agree in the first few days i had my Mac Mini i was running it with 256mb RAM and the poor thing was a slug (the beautiful OS is completely crippled with 256), it struggled in most basic tasks, like opening preview or playing a AVI while surfing the web....
Boosted it to 512mb and it works soooo much better, i am thinking of swapping that for a gig and this little baby will motor,
Tell your bro to put in another 512mb chip and get 768mb for the iMac...

You can't put Graphics as a subcategory of Apple Software. It should be a top-level category like Networking. There should be subcategories:

Or just install ClickToFlash and you can decide what Flash content you want to load. Many people, including me, use that plug-in with their laptops, it's very useful.

Buying on Apple's site is just as safe as buying straight from a shop.
Safer, really, as you eliminate the risk of being hit by a bus, in a car accident, mugged, robbed, stabbed, shot, in a train derailment, etc...

I was thinking of purchasing some Apple In-ear headphones (not the ones that come with the iPod), and just thought I'd see if anybody on MR had some b4 i got some on eBay or Apple.com

I'll at least show up for the free t-shirt! I'm planning on updating my MacBook when they refresh. I was at the Biltmore store for Panther and they gave away dog tags just for showing up.

Or am I just crazy in trying to do this?
*cough cough*
Your closest bet is hoping that the wireless USB Hub is compatible with the X-Box 360. Belkin makes one, I believe. Not 100% sure if it works nor do I think it even will. If it somehow magically works out, expect to spend $200 on the hub alone.
Try to impress me though. I quite like my wireless PS2 Guitar Hero controller. I don't understand why they could've just made a wireless controller with a USB dongle and get around Microsoft's proprietary wireless restrictions. Maybe Red Octane is saving that for later?

It's a decent machine for surfing the net, but watch out for flash.
You can't upgrade beyond 10.5 as others have mentioned.
My wife uses a 1.33 ghz iBook G4 for surfing and it's fine.

Get a pair of AKG or Sennheiser closed back headphones (you need closed back, since you don't want the sound in your headphones to leak out and get picked up by the microphone).
The Yeti is a pretty good value microphone, and should do fine.
Is this for spoken stuff? Singing?
GarageBand is fine for simple recording. If you want to do more complicated stuff, take a look at Logic express - it's has most of the functions of Logic Pro, but with a limit on the number of tracks in a project (32 I think, which should be plenty), and it doesn't ship with as many samples and virtual instruments.

what do you guys think about this:
http://guides.macrumors.com/Template:Tigertip
as seen here:
http://guides.macrumors.com/Spotlight
Some of the guides are Tiger-only, so I thought I'd make that little badge.
I like the graphic, and think it will add value to the guide. My only concern is that once Leopard comes out, and spotlight is suddenly on more operating systems than just Tiger (as well as the rest of the 200+ Tiger features that manage to stick around), how easy/difficult will it be to update all those pages that have Tigertip on them?

Hi guys,
Can't figure this one out.
I have two macbook pro's, one is a 2009 13" macbook pro running leopard, the other a brand new i7 15" macbook pro running snow leopard.
I have them both configured as much the same as you can with the two operating systems and I swap them about a lot at the moment, when studying, I use the new one to work on, and the old one for internet and information. Kind of a geeky mission control thing going on.
But now the 13" won't connect to the internet.
Ethernet seems fine
Wireless connection seems fine
yet no internet.
This happened 2 days ago, and I managed to fix it by repairing permissions and restarting. Now this has happened again today but the same thing won't fix it.
Any pointers would be really helpful.
Kind regards
Jonny

If none of those options work for you, find a church or school that would take them. Many have access to low income families that could use a computer for simple word processing, email and web surfing.
Great idea!

I had the same issue regarding vpc image size. The vpc image does not decrease in size even after you delete files or uninstall programs. The vpc image only grows in size it does not dynamically get smaller.
You will need to manually reduce the size of the vpc image with this procedure:
This procedure is for Windows 95, 98, NT 4, and 2000 guest operating systems.
Be sure to backup any important data before beginning procedure, as this directly changes the guest image contents.
1. Defragment the guest OS hard drive.
2. Backup any critical data in the guest OS.
3. Download Eraser, (http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/) and install it in the guest OS.
4. Run Eraser in the guest OS.
5. Select Edit->Preferences->Erasing
6. Select "Unused Disk Space"
7. Select "New"
8. Enter the description "Blank"
9. Select Add
10. Create a 3-byte pattern of zeros. On the "Custom Method Editor" window, near the bottom you'll see "Pattern" and underneath that, will be "Byte 1" (with 8 zeros), then "Byte 2" with a checkbox by it, and a greyed out "Byte 3". When you check the "Byte 2" box, the "Byte 3" will no longer be greyed out and you can then check it, thus creating a 3 byte pattern of zeros.
11. Hit Save
12. Select "Blank" under "Unused disk space"
13. Hit Ok
14. Select File->New Task
15. Select "Unused space on drive"
16. Select Local Hard Drives
17. Hit OK
18. Select Task->run on the previously created task
19. When finished, close the report
20. Exit Eraser and shutdown the guest PC. Make sure the guest is not in a saved state.
21. Use Virtual Disk Assistant on the Mac to reclaim lost space. Pressing "command+d" will start Virtual Disk Assistant.
22. Select Examine or modify existing disk image, and click the right arrow to continue.
23. Click Select Disk and browse to the location of the disk image to compact. Generally, this will be the Virtual PC 4 folder.
24. Double-click the disk image and click the right arrow to continue.
25. Select Reclaim zeroed drive space and click the right arrow to continue.
26. Click Reclaim Space.
Hope this helps.

I'm trying to find a way to play a VC-1 encoded video stream on a Snow Leopard system.
Google tells me, manually installing Flip4Mac and the outdated Quicktime Pro v7 could work. Both are not really welcome on my system, so I'd like to find a way to play VC-1 encoded video by other means.
Has anyone found a way to accomplish this... or maybe a way to convert the stream (on mac!)?

Yeah and there was a thread on it already........
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1140219&highlight=2011+refurbished
Hmm, I missed that thread, as well as when that model first showed up. I've been checking pretty consistently. It must have gone quickly the first time around.

I have a mbp (17in stock from the store) I bought about 8 months ago. One day about a week ago I left it sitting on my desk (turned on) for the day and when I got home it was dead (obviously). I plugged it in overnight and in the morning when I went to turn it on nothing happened. The little light on the power plug was green and the batter indicator showed fully charged. I've tried pretty much everything I can find on the web and nothing seems to work (the battery is sealed so I can't take that out). Anybody have any ideas?
